His first academic venture beyond Scandinavia brought him to California, where he studied physics at the University of California, Berkeley, earning his M.A. in 1992, and Ph.D. in 1994.

Sophia was activated on April 19, 2015 and made her first public appearance at South by Southwest Festival (SXSW) in mid-March 2016 in Austin, Texas, United States. She is able to display more than 50 facial expressions.

Professor Brynjolfsson is on the academic advisory board of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, and Time Magazine’s Board of Economists. He is co-principal investigator on several grants by the National Science Foundation to study Information Technology, Organizational Transformation and Productivity.
